Rodion Raskolnikov, a former law student living in poverty in St Petersburg, is convinced that a truly exceptional person has the right to step over ordinary moral rules. He decides to prove it by killing a pawnbroker. What follows is less a detective story than a study of conscience: the fever, the lies, the sleepless nights, and the investigator who quietly begins to understand him.

First published in instalments in The Russian Messenger in 1866, it is the novel many readers meet first. It asks a question that has never gone out of date: what does a person owe to others — and to themselves — when they believe the rules do not apply to them?
