Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, a greedy, scandalous landowner, is murdered — and his three sons, each a different answer to the question of how to live, are drawn into the investigation: passionate Dmitri, rational Ivan, and gentle Alyosha, a novice monk. A fourth figure, the family servant Smerdyakov, watches from the margins.

Dostoevsky's last and largest novel, published in instalments in 1879–80, contains the famous chapter "The Grand Inquisitor" and some of the most searching writing on faith, doubt, freedom and guilt in any language. He died a few months after finishing it.
