Alexei Velchaninov, a restless middle-aged man stuck in a sweltering St Petersburg summer, is visited by a stranger in mourning: Pavel Pavlovich, the widower of a woman Velchaninov once knew well. What begins as an awkward reunion becomes a strange, tense duel between two men who cannot leave each other alone.

Part psychological thriller, part black comedy, it is one of Dostoevsky's shortest and most underrated works — a compact study of jealousy, guilt and the roles we play.
