Prince Dmitry Nekhlyudov, serving as a juror at a trial, recognises the accused: Katyusha Maslova, a young woman he seduced and abandoned years earlier. Wrongly convicted and sentenced to Siberia, she is followed by Nekhlyudov, who sets out to put right what he can.

The story widens into a sweeping portrait of the courts, prisons, church and society of imperial Russia. It was Tolstoy’s last full-length novel, and he gave the proceeds to help the Doukhobors, a persecuted pacifist sect, emigrate to Canada.
