A prosperous, calculating merchant, Vasily Brekhunov, sets out in winter with his peasant servant Nikita to close a deal on a grove of trees. A snowstorm leaves them lost on the open steppe, and in the course of a single night the story tests what each man values most.
Only a few dozen pages long, it is one of the finest of Tolstoy’s late stories.
