On a train, a man named Pozdnyshev tells a fellow passenger how he came to murder his wife. His confession becomes a furious argument about marriage, jealousy and desire, and a challenge to the conventions of Tolstoy’s own age.

Named after Beethoven’s violin sonata, which plays a part in the story, it caused a scandal and was banned by the censors.
